The horror elements, combined with the psychological breakdown of her character to the extremely impressive (for an actor not a dancer) dancing(compared to the standard/ not extremely impressive ballet dancing seen before in the movie), psychical metamorphism and also pretty bad ass costumes, all combine at the very end scene to a crescendo of imagery, sounds, and mind-fucks that evoke waves of emotion from the audience ( maybe it was just me). The last twenty minutes were absolutely brilliant. However, the script itself did not live up to their abilities. In fact, wonderful performance from everyone. It makes me sad actually, because I have always enjoyed Natalie Portman's work, but I just found her annoying. However, that just is a false veneer used to make it appear that the film is deep and existential, when really it's an old idea that has been done before and done much better. The only thing slightly original about it is that it was set around Swan Lake. Second, you could have pretty much swapped the Swan Lake plot point with any type of performance competition or even a job and the you could have kept the plot mostly intact.

It just seemed obvious to me from the beginning. The director's constant pushing, her emotional fragility. Natalie Portman's meekness and her mom's obvious control freak nature. First, the plot was predictable from the beginning. I know everyone just went nuts for this movie, but aside from fantastic cinematography I thought it was predictable and pretentious.
